Miriam Stern: I am a painter, printmaker, and installation artist. I have exhibited both in the United States and Israel. Recently I created an interactive website called Be the Tenth. The viewer can choose a minyan of his/her choice and recite the kaddish with the other nine (virtual) people.

I wanted to create something in memory of my mother z’l who died in 2008. Saying kaddish every day led me to understand the tremendous effort people make to fulfill the mitzvah of saying kaddish. I also appreciate the tremendous effort people who are not mourners make to attend a daily minyan. The fact that we are dependent on each other and need each other to fulfill a mitzvah is a powerful dynamic.

I also create art that is more secular in nature. Please check it to see my prints, paintings, and collages. My new series called “Stuff” deals with excess baggage, both physical and figurative, that we carry around or accumulate and don’t really need.
